With Nannies such as myself becoming more and more popular amongst families, I thought I would share some wonderful tips with you which will help you feel like you’ve got this!
Hiring a Nanny can be such a big step, and an important one too!
Accepting a new person into your home can make many parents a little nervous, to say the least!
And to be honest, there can be lots of little thing’s we need to see from you, just as you do in us!
So without further ado, here are my insider tips to keep a good Nanny!
Offer a fair wage
Sounds like a moment now to say, “Duh” doesn’t it? But seriously, no educated Nanny would dream of working with a family who doesn’t truly respect their level of professionalism. I once had a family quote £5 an hour which I think I would have spent more than that just getting there!!
Our jobs are more than just money but you have to think that you wouldn’t accept a below- average position for a high skill set, then why would we?
Back the Nanny up
This is a monumental part of the job and in order to stick around a Nanny must feel like your all a team together, on the same page.
I understand it takes a while to build up trust with a new Nanny and some parents are cautious of this. However, a major turn-off for Nannies is when the parents don’t stand with us as a team!
It’s so important if you want to keep your Nanny to stand on their side too. There are cases were a Nanny takes their Nanny kiddos out, comes home stating a little on was misbehaving and the parent will shrug their shoulders and say something like “Oh well he’s not normally like that”.
Pitter Patter there goes your Nanny!
Make sure your methods of teaching and discipline are the same!
There is no point in everyone running around like headless chickens all doing different methods with the children. Not only will this confuse them but nothing will work especially on the discipline side!
For example, if you use time out’s, the nanny would too. Or perhaps you are teaching your child English, have an English speaking Nanny!
Be interested in the person, not just the Nanny
It can be very easy to slip into thinking of a new person in your home as someone who is providing a service and no more. Like your own work wherever that may be, you’d like to think that your boss cares about your background and wellbeing and this is just as true for Nannies!
To grow a flourishing working relationship and to keep a Nanny don’t be afraid to develop a bond with them. Ask about their interests and be there for them if they go through sad times just as they would for you.
The best parents I have worked with have been with ones who have been genuinely interested in who I am. I become an extension of the family time and time again and I now have wonderful friendships with. Plus, opening a whole new line of communication with your Nanny in a friendly way will encourage them to open up to you with you even more.
Be respectful of your Nannies time
When I first began Nannying I bumped into lots of families who’d cancel on me last minute or even better forget to tell me they had changed their plans. Needless to say, wasn’t sticking around for long!
As working professionals, we rely on your word so we too can pay bills and such!
So please, if you ever do hire a Nanny pop a 24 hour notice period with them!
Say Thank you
Believe me, it’s so simple but this goes a long long way. Recently, the Mother of a family I nanny with said to me “You are wonderful, thank you” as I was heading out the door. I couldn’t resist but running up to her with a big smile on my face and gave her a big Cuddle!
A little goes a long way! Nannies will do so much for your family. We are often tired and have our own life going on in the background yet we still go the extra mile for your family. And at the end of the day, I can promise you, you’re going to make your Nanny’s day!
Keep up a good line of jibber jabber with your Nanny by having monthly check-ups with them. Talk about what is working and what isn’t working on both sides.
Always let your Nanny known exactly what is expected too of them and you won’t go wrong!
