Okay so, there are 3 main reasons why Nanny M recently gave these bad boys a go.

1- Less waste in our environment.

2- I feel these are the most natural way to go.

3- No more extra money flying out the door!

You will probably have some reasons of your own for being interested in re-usable pads, whatever it may be every point is valid and we all deserve to feel the best we can during the time of the month.

I have basically outlined everything you need to know so that you can decide on whether these are right for you!

Think of this as one giant review from my own experience!

Cost

At £17.99 a pop you can argue it’s not cheap!

In a way, if they were super cheap, then I would argue that the materials used or the quality of the product is not up to par.

The good thing is, after spending close to £20, if you are to properly care for them they are said to last you at least 5 years!

Plus I’m pretty happy knowing I am saving a ton! Think about it, each month I spend about £5 on disposable pads, so that’s £60 a year and £600 over 10 years! That could have been a holiday!

The fact that I am not giving my body any toxins or chemicals, plus I am saving all that money now is a massive win!

Delivery

Dun Dun Duunnnn! Sorry, I’ll be serious now I just felt like that heading had a rather ominous tone to it.

Gladly, everything went really smoothly receiving them. It took two days for my package to be delivered and since I wasn’t going to be home on the day I requested for it to be left in our shed which they did so!

They came in amazons cardboard box so everything was nice and discreet and once you open it has a see-through cellophane package inside with your pads ready and waiting!

Once I had a look at these guys I was really happy with how pretty they are! The last thing I want is anything that makes me feel even yuckier during the time of the month than I already do!

I also loved how there was no smell of plastic or anything! The only smell I can smell on them now is my washing detergent!

What’s it like to use them?

Naturally, I was a little hesitant. I guess there is a big cloud over certain aspects of these which leave people not quite sure. Many women are concerned if it’s truly hygienic and worth the care that they do require.

When it came my time (another Dun Dun Dun moment) instead of popping to my local shops for my usual disposable pads I popped one of these on.

The feeling was quite different for me. I feel because I am soo used to pads it took a little bit of time to get used to the softness. Once I did though I can honestly ask myself why I haven’t tried them before!

Aside from the lovely bamboo softness, they also didn’t become heavy with my period or noticeable so I could walk about and live my life like any other day and not have to worry.

When it comes to changing, make sure you are either tuned in with your body or make sure you time your changes. Since the Pad is a charcoal colour you can still see your period, but not as much as if you’re like me and used to wearing white pads. For me this is no biggie, it’s just strange at first when you’re so used to looking at bleached white (probably not the healthiest thing either!)

Changing

The good thing is the bamboo inside these pads is super absorbent so there are no leaks or drips. When it comes to changing out with your home, what you can do is either use a little sanitary bag or purchase their wash bag for the pads and pop a fresh one on.

You can even buy their very own cute little wash bag!

 

Also, note that heartfelt sell different flows to suit you!

I don’t know whether it’s because I’m a Nanny but I got big feels there for the story Goldilocks and the three bears… “Daddy Bear had a big bowl of porridge, Mummy Bear had a Medium one and Baby bear had a small bowl”

Anywho! Nanny M here purchased the medium pack!

Washing

I don’t know about you but I had so many questions about washing!

It really is super simple.

All you do is pop your towels into a wash bag when you are doing a normal wash and Bobs your uncle!

Obviously, keep a spare one out or if you are wearing one so that you are covered until the other ones are washed.

I also really liked that they didn’t go super heavy in the washing machine. So when I came to take them out to dry I didn’t have to worry that they would take lots of time to dry.

I normally now just dry on the heater when we have a cold, wet day over here in Sunny Scotland or when then Sun does decide to pop round I hang them out with our washing.

Lots of people choose just to rinse them or soak in Bicarb and Vinegar too which if this works for you but I find it easier to wash them and let the machine do its magic.

Do they smell?

I’m quite relieved to say No!

I think this would have been the thing that totally turned me off if they did. Yes your Nanny M works with poop daily but I sure as hell wanna prance about still smelling like a flower.

Since the inside of the pad is so absorbent, it also won’t let yucky smells out so you don’t need to worry about walking about not smelling your best.

When I’m out somewhere changing over I will fold it over using the poppers in a sanitary bag and leave there for a few hours.

I have happily never noticed any kind of smell, woho!

Much less waste in our environment

Tampons, Pads and panty liners thrown away with all their packaging causes 200,000 tonnes of waste per year!

Did you know that it takes six pints of water to grow one bud of cotton? To make our pads durable, most companies use non-organic cotton, which has been saturated in pesticides and insecticides.

Pads are also filled with artificial colours, polyester, adhesives, polyethene (PET), polypropylene and propylene glycol, which pretty much sounds like a chemical soup!

Check out this video where a lady sets one cotton, natural pad on fire and a store-bought pad. One of them burns super quickly!

The FAB thing is these is that they keep so much more plastic waste out of our landfill!

Super duper natural

Your skin is one of the largest organs in your body and also the thinnest.  When chemicals go through your stomach they are much more likely to be fought off by enzymes and flushed out of your body. Yet when they go through your skin, they go straight into your bloodstream.

In my opinion, say you workout and eat right, why are you not concerned what’s on your skin too?

From a young age, I always had terrible eczema. When I was very little I was always having to wrap up my skin so I looked like a little Mummy and lots of hospital trips. Nowadays my skin is so good because I take such good care of it.

So, if what we put on the outside is only going to end up inside then I for one aren’t taking any chances!
